Have you ever found yourself talking to a local friend, and realize that there are so many things in your city that you haven’t seen or done, even though they are the things that your city are known for?
Like living in LA but never having gone to the Griffith Observatory, living in Utah but never gone skiing, or living in Maryland but never having visited DC.
When you live somewhere, you take those experiences a bit for granted, even though they are things that tourists will travel the world to come and see.
Obviously, if you don’t like skiing, don’t bother going, but if there is something that you are interested in in your area, and have never done, then you should take a chance to experience it!
Stay at a local hotel
One of the best ways to really experience your city in a new way, is to pretend you don’t live there.
That seems counterproductive, but it’s a great way to put yourself in a position to experience things that you haven’t yet.
It will also help you get the experience of traveling without actually having to go anywhere.
Find a local hotel in an area of the city that you haven’t spent enough time in, and spend a night there.
Ask the concierge for recommendations on things to do and places to see in the area. You’ll find you’ll get some unexpected recommendations that you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise.
Visit all of the touristy monuments
A lot of people avoid the touristy parts of their town. Often for good reason; they are flocked by tourists, making it hard to enjoy.
However, if there are any of them in your area you’ve ever been interested in doing, you should find a time this summer to go.
Try going early in the morning or on a weekday, to minimize the amount of tourists in the area so you can enjoy the experience a little bit more.
Enjoy new restaurants
We often get stuck in a rut of going to the same places to eat every weekend.
We know the menus, know what we like, and it makes it hard to try new places.
Find a few blogs or instagram pages that specifically cover food in your area, and read up on the best places in your area that you haven’t tried yet.
Maybe make a goal to go to one new restaurant a week, and try new types of cuisines, and maybe even places you maybe wouldn’t consider normally.
You may surprise yourself and find a few new favorites! Maybe spend a day visiting a handful of coffee shops, rating them to find the best one in the area.
Go to wine tasting classes at a local bar, and really spend time exploring the culture and food scene in your area.
Spend some time just walking around
One of the best parts of traveling, is spending time walking around and just enjoying the scenery, taking everything in.
Even if you’ve lived somewhere your whole life, you’ve always looked at your city as someone who lives there.
Everything around you is kind of taken for granted. So take a day to walk around, enjoy a coffee and let yourself enjoy your city through new eyes.
Often, we take the city we live in for granted. Even if you plan on living there for the rest of your life, you have no way of knowing what your life has in store.
You would probably hate to move away without experiencing the things about your city that make it special and memorable, so take that into your own hands, and experience your city in a new way this summer.
